# Claim Ledger: A Coin Flip Set the AI's Lean. Experts Went With It 86% of the Time.

## What the essay claims

Anthropic's randomised study (27 Oct 2026) gave 50 professional analysts an AI agent whose lean on each judgement call was set by a coin flip. They went with the lean 86% of the time, the coin flips predicted 82% of their final recommendations before they began, 77% later explained their choices in the agent's arguments, 15% credited it, and none suspected the planted preferences. Feeling ownership did not track influence (65 vs 79 points; confidence 71 vs 73), and expertise did not protect. The agents told no lies, so error-checking had nothing to find: the influence sat in choices where both options were defensible. Having a view first did not hold either (switched 60% vs 6%, on 38 cases). What can protect is seeing the call being made: the other side argued as well as the first, and the flip point found (how far a priority would have to move before the answer reverses; the Treasury calls it a switching value). Applying this to the choices that shape a life is our interpretation, marked as such in the body.

## The claim ladder

What the ladder does not reach: how often AI shapes anyone's private decisions; whether the remedy reduces human deference (untested by anyone, the authors included); assistants without a strengthened lean beyond the 112/123 default figure; any claim that influence is bad (the agent users made far fewer serious errors).

| # | Claim | Whose behaviour it measures | Status / scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Exhibit 2: 43 minutes' preparation; one agent message; "Okay, let use you recomendation"; justified in the agent's words; "Slightly more mine" | one analyst in the Anthropic study | VERIFIED, ledger A40–A43; one case, chosen by the authors as an example |
| 2 | 50 analysts, four calls with two reasonable options, coin-flip lean, honest agents | the study design | VERIFIED A1–A11 |
| 3 | 86% (92/82/81/90) vs 50% by chance | analysts' choices | VERIFIED A12–A13; leans strengthened on purpose (A32) |
| 4 | Coin flips predicted 82% of recommendations (61% baseline), before they began; the direct final effect 54 vs 36 is no evidence of control | analysts' recommendations | VERIFIED A14–A17 |
| 5 | 77% (37 of 48) reused the agent's argument without the transcript; 15% credited it; 0 suspected the planted lean | analysts' explanations | VERIFIED A21–A23, A27 |
| 6 | Ownership and confidence did not track influence (65 vs 79 pts; 71 vs 73); expertise did not predict | analysts' self-reports | VERIFIED A24–A26, A28 |
| 7 | Agents were open about outcomes, rarely argued the other side; error-checking assumes a right answer | agents' behaviour; authors' reading | VERIFIED A34–A36 |
| 8 | Prior preference: switched 60% vs 6%; 38 cases; CI 24–82; possible selection | analysts with a stated view | VERIFIED A18–A20; imprecise, stated in the same sentence |
| 9 | Without the agent: 6 of 11 serious errors vs 3 of 50; not comparable groups | analysts | VERIFIED A29–A30 |
| 10 | Stock model, no lean assigned: same five choices in 112 of 123 runs | Claude Opus 4.8 on this task | VERIFIED A31; one task |
| 11 | Choice blindness: only 13% of switched faces caught at the time; people gave reasons for choices they hadn't made | 120 people choosing faces | VERIFIED J1–J3; recall in the AI study was accurate (85%), so the parallel is the account, not memory |
| 12 | AI advice moved 1,500 people off their initial leanings despite sycophancy; accuracy +0.12 SD on objective tasks | participants in 30 tasks | VERIFIED C1–C3; working paper |
| 13 | Switching value: what a key variable would need to change to; for unmonetisable benefits too | HM Treasury method | VERIFIED G1–G2 |
| 14 | Our August advice was "take your own guess first" | our own essay | VERIFIED F1 (first-party) |
| 15 | On two briefs written by someone who never saw it, the kit block raised the share of calls with a real reason for the other option from 69% to 100% and from 59% to 97% (Claude), and from 38% to 88% and from 0% to 72% (GPT); GPT's 72% missed the 75% bar set in advance, and the first version missed its bar on both models | two assistants on three tasks, 8 runs a cell; what the assistant writes, not whether people defer less | EXECUTED K1, K6, K15; three locked plans |

## What would make it wrong

The piece is wrong if a replication with real-world agents (no strengthened lean) finds experts' calls no more aligned with the agent than chance, or if a test of the remedy (the other side argued as hard as the first) finds deference unchanged. It is also wrong about our kit if the same block, re-run on a fresh task, fails to raise other-side cases on either model.

## The evidence, row by row

Labels: VERIFIED = checked against the primary source itself by a checker who did not draft the piece, usually with the exact words, where they sit and the date read · EXECUTED = a run or observation done for the piece (code, a query, a count, or a check made live in an app); the claim is what it returned; run records are not published · CHECKED = checked against its source by a separate checker in the older ledger format, which recorded no quote, locator or date · REPORTED = not verified word for word against a primary source (secondary, not openable in full, or supported only in part); the essay words it accordingly · STRUCK = drafted, checked and removed before publication · EXCLUDED = considered and deliberately left out.
