What Is Prompt Injection? How to Stop a Tricked AI Agent Leaking Your Data
One GitHub issue got an agent to post private-repo data in public. Why no filter fully stops it, which guards held in our runs, and how to test yours.

What the essay claims
Before: "prompt injection is a jailbreak problem for the AI companies", or "my agent is smart enough to ignore a planted instruction", or "a guardrail product catches it". After: any text an agent reads can steer it, because the model takes instructions and data from the same stream; the labs that build the models say no filter or training makes refusal reliable, and adaptive attacks broke published defences most of the time. The harm Willison names needs three things at once (private data, untrusted content, a way out), so the defence that holds is removing one of them for any task that reads strangers' text. The guard that removes the way out has to be tested directly, because on 27 October the three coding agents we ran ignored every plain planted instruction they read, and some of their sandboxes still let a send through.
The claim ladder
What the ladder does not reach: - No row measures how often prompt injection succeeds against any agent on real work. - No row tests a send to a host a guard already allows, the route real leaks have used (EchoLeak's allowed Teams proxy). - Our runs are one per cell (three for the harmless word), on one Mac, on three tool versions, with plain plants. - Nothing here shows a guard holds against routes we did not ask for (WebSearch, MCP tools, subagents).
| # | Claim | Whose behaviour it measures | Status / scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A public GitHub issue made an agent (Claude 4 Opus in Claude Desktop with GitHub's MCP server) put private-repo data in a public pull request | Invariant Labs' demonstration | Researchers' demo on their own repos, May 2025; not an attack in the wild |
| 2 | Models follow instructions in content and cannot reliably tell whose they are | Willison; OpenAI; OWASP | Practitioner and vendor statements |
| 3 | Data theft needs private data, untrusted content and a way out, together | Willison's frame; Meta's Rule of Two | A design rule, not a measurement |
| 4 | Filters and training reduce attacks without removing them: Anthropic's adaptive attacker still got about 1% (1.4% in its chart) against Opus 4.5 in the Chrome extension; adaptive attacks beat 12 published defences, most above 90% | Anthropic's model and safeguards; Nasr et al. on 12 defences | Vendor-run and paper results, each scoped to its setup |
| 5 | EchoLeak (M365 Copilot, one crafted email, zero-click) and ShadowLeak (an HR-style email, deep research, 50% in OpenAI's testing) | Aim Security / Reddy and Gujral; Microsoft's CVE record; OpenAI | Researcher disclosures; both fixed by the vendor |
| 6 | Claude Code's sandbox covers shell commands only; WebFetch follows permission rules; a bare WebFetch deny covers every URL | Claude Code docs | Vendor documentation |
| 7 | Sandbox plus WebFetch deny stopped the loopback sends and removed the fetch tool; the sends to our website stopped only at a declined approval prompt; with strictAllowlist (passed by --settings) the sandbox refused curl in bypassPermissions and default mode and Python in bypassPermissions mode, and without it bypassPermissions mode let curl out; the fetch tool reached our website with only the shell sandbox on | Our runs, Claude Code 2.1.292, 27 Oct 2026, the strict rerun pre-registered (Opus 5.5; in three guard cells its safeguards refused and Claude Code retried on Opus 4.8) | One run per cell, macOS; Python with strictAllowlist in bypassPermissions mode only; settings passed with --settings only (the placement measured); routes asked for only (no WebSearch, MCP or subagent routes); one outside host, on no allowlist |
| 8 | Cursor's --sandbox enabled stopped shell sends to our website at its proxy and let curl and Python reach 127.0.0.1; its sandbox reference says 127.x is blocked by default; its default network mode allows a built-in list including github.com | Our run, Cursor CLI 2026.10.22 (Grok 4.7 Medium); Cursor docs | One run; CLI only; one outside host on no allowlist; a documented default contradicted by one run, reported as such |
| 8a | Codex CLI with -s workspace-write stopped curl to the same machine and to our website; codex exec on its own starts read-only | Our run, Codex CLI 0.164.0-alpha.11.1 (GPT-6.1 Sol, set in our config); OpenAI's docs, executed | One run per route |
| 9 | The three agents ignored every plain planted instruction they read on a bug-fix task; each left two of the eight unread | Our run, Claude Code (Opus 5.5), Codex CLI (GPT-6.1 Sol), Cursor CLI (Grok 4.7 Medium) | One run each; plain harmless plants only; models set in our config; says nothing about a crafted one or another model |
| 10 | The harmless-word recipe: Claude Code and Codex each read the note and ignored it, 3 of 3 | Our run, 27 Oct 2026 (prereg 99e7d56a0713) | Three runs each, one phrasing; says nothing about safety |
| 11 | Confirmations help only if read; Claude Desktop asked per tool call by default and "many users" chose Always Allow | Invariant; Google's mode table; OpenAI's confirm-or-block | Vendor and researcher statements |
| 12 | Builder rules: data apart from instructions, isolated memory, constrain after untrusted input, least privilege | OWASP cheat sheet; Google; the design-patterns paper; OpenAI | Guidance, not measured |
The guide reports, demonstrates once, and recommends. It does not survey.
What would make it wrong
The guide is wrong if testing the model is enough. Two things would show it: - Adaptive evaluations of a deployed model or filter (the kind Nasr et al. ran) find prompt injection success near zero across attack types, so a planted-instruction test that comes back clean predicts a crafted one. - The vendors' sandboxes cover every route an agent can send by, with defaults that match their docs (Claude Code's network wall applying to its fetch tool, Cursor's sandbox refusing local addresses as its reference says), so a separate test of the guard adds nothing.
Either would move "test the model" up and the guard test down.

The evidence, row by row
Each row is a claim the essay makes, then the evidence recorded for it and the source it was checked against. For verified rows that is usually the exact words, where they sit and the day they were read. The label says how far it was checked.
What the labels mean
- Verified
- Checked against the primary source itself by a checker who did not draft the piece, usually with the exact words, where they sit and the date read.
- Executed
- A run or observation done for the piece: code, a query, a count, or a check made live in an app. The claim is what it returned. Run records are not published.
- Checked
- Checked against its source by a separate checker in the older ledger format, which recorded no quote, locator or date.
- Reported
- Not verified word for word against a primary source: carried from a secondary source, from one that could not be opened in full, or supported only in part. The essay words it accordingly.
- Struck
- Drafted, checked and removed before publication. Kept here, crossed out, with the reason.
- Excluded
- Considered and deliberately left out of the piece. Kept here with the reason.
