Law II

Difficulty Is Load-Bearing

The hard parts ARE the mechanism producing value — but only difficulty that forces an INDEPENDENT ROUTE to the answer; effort along the existing route is removable.

The claim in full

The hard, constrained, effortful, and unmeasurable parts of a system are not bugs to optimise away — they are the structural mechanisms producing value. Remove them and the output collapses. AMENDED 2026-08-18: this holds for difficulty that forces an INDEPENDENT ROUTE to the answer — a second, differently-derived way of knowing whether the thing is right. Difficulty that only adds effort ALONG the existing route is not load-bearing and can be removed freely. Scope limit: the criterion governs epistemic difficulty (knowing), not capacity difficulty (doing) — progressive overload, hormesis and deliberate practice sit outside it and remain untested.

What would falsify it

A law that cannot fail is not a law. Each of these is the observation that would break this one, written before the evidence was looked for, so the frame can lose.

An epistemic difficulty whose removal collapsed the valuable output while forcing no independent route to the answer; OR an epistemic difficulty that forced an independent route and cost nothing to remove. Supersedes the prior falsifier ("a system where removing difficulty led to sustained improvement"), which was met by containerisation and anaesthesia and could not distinguish load-bearing difficulty from mere cost.

How it is standing

Every candidate counter-example logged against the falsifier above, counted. Dismissed means examined and found not to bear on the claim; watching means open.

A low challenge count is not strength. It can equally mean the law has not been aimed at anything hard enough to break it, which is why the date matters as much as the number. Record compiled 27 Aug 2026.

Amendments

The statement above is not the original. Each row is a time the law was rewritten because it failed a test, with the reason it failed.

Independent-route criterion. The prior statement could not fail: whenever removing a difficulty improved output, one could always say that difficulty was not the load-bearing one. A pre-registered cross-domain probe returned 2 clean falsifiers of 5, and its single survivor split the set exactly — hand calculation to FEA SURVIVED because the difficulty forced an independent route to "is this model right" (Sleipner A, shear under-predicted ~45%, ~$700M, and nobody caught it), while surgical speed and manual hand-stowage FALSIFIED because they forced no independent route and were cost along the existing one. Containerisation is primary-grounded on Bernhofen, El-Sahli and Kneller, Journal of International Economics 98 (2016) 36-50 — a ~700% cumulative 20-year treatment effect on North-North trade, larger than FTAs or the GATT. The US Naval Academy's stated reason for restoring celestial navigation in 2015 is the criterion verbatim: "computers are great. The problem is, there's no backup."
