Fractal generator

Choose a fractal flame or a 3D fractal and it renders live on your graphics card. Change the colours and the motion, breed a new flame, then save a picture or a loop.

Fractals

Two kinds of fractal

A fractal flame throws millions of points through a few curved transforms and counts where they land. Brightness follows the logarithm of the count, which gives the fine filaments and the sense of one strand passing in front of another. It is Scott Draves's flame algorithm, the one behind Electric Sheep.

Mutate breeds a new flame from the one on screen: it turns, shifts or swaps a transform, and keeps the result only if it is neither empty nor blown out.

The 3D fractals are marched ray by ray through shapes defined by formulas: a cathedral of nested spheres, a Mandelbox and kaleidoscopic crystals, lit by a key light and fogged with distance. A Julia set sits with the illusions.

Both kinds loop with no jump, so a fractal can be a moving background or a video. It all runs in your browser tab, with no account.
