The question we ask of every lab: is most of its value in the model, which gets cheaper fastest, or in something other work is built on? Our answer: in something other work is built on.
Anthropic is climbing the stack toward the layer where models do real work. Claude Code and the agent tooling are its durable position; the raw model underneath commoditises like everyone else’s.
What would change our readA rival agent tool matches Claude Code’s reliability, or Anthropic’s model quality falls far enough that the tooling can no longer carry it.
01 · What it runs on, and the money
Trains and serves on
Claude trains and runs on AWS Trainium, Google TPUs, NVIDIA GPUs and AMD Instinct. AWS is the named primary training and cloud provider, under a commitment of more than $100B over ten years. AMD agreed in July 2026 to supply up to 2 GW of MI450 GPUs, building on Anthropic’s existing use of AMD chips, and in May 2026 Anthropic secured GPU capacity at SpaceX’s Colossus sites. What it depends on Four chip families are contracted and AWS is named primary. Amazon, Google, NVIDIA and AMD each supply chips and have invested or committed to invest, so its suppliers and its shareholders overlap. Source
Biggest risk More than $100B is committed to AWS over ten years and AWS is the named primary provider, while Amazon is also one of the largest shareholders. Source

- Structure
- A Delaware public benefit corporation. A Long-Term Benefit Trust, whose trustees hold no equity, holds a share class that elects part of the board. It confidentially submitted a draft IPO registration to the SEC on 1 Jun 2026. Source
NotesPer-token prices understate the cost of text since Claude Opus 4.7, whose tokenizer produces roughly 30% more tokens for the same input. Press reports put the run rate above $65B at the end of July (Bloomberg, Aug 2026) and describe a proposal to give the founders majority voting control (The Information, Sep 2026); Anthropic has confirmed neither. Headcount and total funding are not published.

03 · When to reach for them
practical read
- Agentic coding
- Reach for Claude Code when the work is multi-step engineering in a real repository (Feb 2025).
- Long-horizon work
- Pick Opus 5.5 for long-running agentic coding and knowledge work, and Fable 5.1 when that falls short (Sep 2026).
- Safety-sensitive
- Use it where the provider’s safety commitments are part of the decision; its most capable model, Mythos 5.1, stays with vetted programmes (Sep 2026).
