The question we ask of every lab: is most of its value in the model, which gets cheaper fastest, or in something other work is built on? Our answer: split between the two.
xAI’s models live on the commoditising output layer, so its edge has to come from elsewhere. The durable bets are distribution through X and compute at Colossus scale.
What would change our readGrok opens a sustained quality lead the other labs cannot close, or X stops being a distribution advantage.
01 · What it runs on, and the money
Trains and serves on
About 1.4 GW of nameplate compute at 30 Jun 2026, up from 1.0 GW in March, with Colossus II still being built out. It also rents compute out: cloud services agreements signed in the quarter add up to $14.1B of contracted sales. Source
What it depends on press reportMost of the AI segment’s revenue is now compute rented to others, so it leans on a few large customers: Anthropic took capacity at the Colossus sites in May 2026, and Google is reported to pay about $920M a month from October 2026. Source 1 Source 2
Biggest risk Its AI segment lost $1.26B from operations on $2.56B of revenue in the quarter to 30 Jun 2026 while spending $15.8B on AI capex. Source
- Raised press report
- About $17B privately, then a $10B round at a $200B valuation (Sep 2025) and a $20B Series E (Jan 2026). The SpaceX IPO closed on 15 Jun 2026 with net proceeds of about $85.7B, and SpaceX issued $25B of bonds on 26 Jun 2026. Source
- Revenue
- The AI segment turned over $2.56B in the quarter to 30 Jun 2026 and lost $1.26B from operations, against $15.8B of AI capex. Of that revenue, $2.19B was AI solutions and infrastructure, mainly compute rented to others; advertising was $367M. Source
- Structure
- No longer a standalone company. xAI is the AI segment of Space Exploration Technologies Corp, which acquired it in February 2026 and listed on Nasdaq as SPCX in June 2026; its own pages now say SpaceXAI. In the June quarter SpaceX announced an agreement to buy Cursor for $60B. Source
NotesThe AI segment also includes X, and no Grok-only revenue is disclosed. The pre-IPO rounds are press figures. The cloud catalogues still list the publisher as xAI.
